Check Engine Light on/OBDII reads coolant thermostat

Check engine light came on, on the freeway, need to replace thermostat. Do I absolutely need to drain my coolant to replace it?

3800? If it's a 3800, you can change it with a little coolant loss. No big deal.

3400, it pretty much dumps a ton of coolant out.
