UPDATE:
The car has been totaled by the insurance company.
I received a postcard from Chevy today, stating: According to our records, as of Feb. 1, 2010, service has not been completed on the following open recall(s) for your Chevrolet.
9047 Engine Compartment Fire
No kidding?!? A little late I guess. Should I call Chevy? What can they do for me now? This is the first communication I have received from Chevy.

Man I hate it that you are having to deal with this. Be glad you were'nt hurt and the fire wasn't bigger.
If you can prove that GM didn't notify you then you may have a case. Have you kept ALL your service
records ? If you have , go back overthem and see if they did infact do a recall campagne on your car
but just did'nt tell you about it. Just guessing here ?
Do you think that there may have been some unspent fuel trapped somwhere ?
And then when it received the ignition..........well you know the rest.
Good Luck.
