Default Can't get the tranny out of Park

97, 3.1, Monte LS. Evidently the mechanism that locks it in park is out of adjustment or failing because it takes a couple of minutes and hard pumping on the brake pedal to get the thing out of park. Where is the part located that is the problem?

i believe its an electrically controlled solenoid that is switched by the brake on/off switch.. might want to check the switch or the solenoid in the shifter console is bad.

I am not sure what ranny you have in it... But in most cases there is a wire that come from the tumbler(where you put the key in the ignition) and it goes back down to the transmission to get the signal that it is ok to run. I had to run a "jumper" because i replaced allt he electrical compnents and it still didn't fix the problem completely, it was 50/50 if it would work or not, ran the jumper and spliced into the wire and it works perfect!

There is a solenoid in the shifter to prevent it from coming out of park without pushing on the brake pedal. it is called BTSI (Brake Shift Trans Interlock) It is controlled by the brake pedal. With the ign on and engine off step on the brake pedal and you should hear it click when it is energized. Most likely problem is the brake switch but I have the solenoid replaced.
Maybe this will help.
