Default Brake lights/Switch

Ok, a few weeks ago I had no brake lights come on when I was braking. No one seems to know why. Got a new brake light switch, it works according to the reader, however there is NO power going to it from the car. Not a fuse, everything was checked. So the wiring was put to each side attached to something else that would provide power (forgive me, I'm a woman and not a mechanic) this worked for a few weeks.

Today, a lady tells me my brake lights are now on even when I'm not braking.

I can't afford to take this to an electrician or a dealership. I can take it to my Uncle who's reader thingy doesn't tell him what the issue is. Says there isn't an issue.

SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!

Hmm, was going to mention the fuse but you already said that's not the case. This is really strange. Maybe try talking to an independent mechanic on craigslist?

The other thing I should mention in case it has some bearing on what is up with this car.

During the summer I was coming up the highway on the off ramp from one major highway to another, doing 140 (klms) and suddenly the power to the car just shut off. Not the engine. Just the headlights, stereo, interior lights. For about 30 seconds. Scariest 30 seconds of my life. Then it all just fired back up and we went along as though nothing happened. That has happened twice in 6 months. Both at night when I need it the most. I always have my stereo on so I would notice it during the day.

This is so frustrating. I can't afford to fix her, and I can't afford to be without her and no one seems to know what to do or where to look.

I also wonder if this has anything to do with the aftermarket stereo I have in it. It doesn't work when on C.D but the bigger wonder is, the green "chip" box thing (switch) just dangles. So, I'm wondering if I should take her in and have the original stereo put back in? Its 120+ to have that done and I could spend that on the back brakes that she needs.

*rips hair out*

She's an 03' with only 140,000 klms on her. She's still in good shape. LOL.

When my brake lights wouldn't work it turned out to be the turn signal switch was bad. Don't ask me how me how that switch is connected to the brake lights, but it is.
