Default Body Control Module (BCM)

Does anyone have any experience replacing the BCM replacement? I am told if I put a new one in the car will not start unless it is programmed. Is this something only a dealer can do?

I had my car at the dealer today because my fob does not unlock the door it turns the lights on and locks the door but does not unlock. I tested a new key fob already.

The dealer said the car needed a BCM $544 with labor but also said if that does not work it will need a receiver modle $250 so the total could be $794 just to unlock my door with the fob. I paid the diag fee and declined.

Yes it sucks but you never know when electrical components will fail. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />
I can unlock with the key but kind of annoying.

When you say you tested a new FOB you are meaning that you programmed it and the old FOB via the radio?

First as I understand a BCM needs programmed with a GM Tech II. It's in a TIGHT spot. If you take the lower kick panel down on the driverside, it is behind the ebrake and the wiring harnesses are TIGHT against the firewall (3 of them if I recall).
When I tore my dash apart for the evap core, at one part I did infact have to remove the BCM. Now, I cannot remember what all had to be removed to access the BCM easily.

I am hesitant to the issue at hand. Might be worth disconnecting the battery and reseating the BCM connectors under the dash. A BCM and PCM should not fail easily.

And at the replacement cost, I'd almost consider having a shop put in an aftermarket keyless entry, it would probably be cheaper I'm sure.

Can they command the doors to unlock with the techII? If so, it's not the bcm. Do the doors unlock when you take the car out of gear?

^^ That was going to be one of my next questions ^^

Also, do both door locks work when operated manually? A defective switch or wiring would have the symptoms you describe.
