Another Security Problem Question
Hey everyone,
Sorry to keep bringing up this question.. I'm still having the problem where I'll get in my car and it wont start for about 10 minutes, and the security light comes on. I havent gotten it fixed yet cause cash is a little tight right now.. So I have 2 questions.. First, when I bought the monte, they gave me two keys, that were not the originals, they were remade, so I'm guessing it doesnt have that chip in them... could that be whats causing the problem?? If so the dealership is going to pay for that.. Secondly, if that isn't the problem, is this a part I can buy and replace myself? Or does it have to be done by the shop??
Thanks!
Karl

I don't remember this question being asked, so if this is a new thread and this has already been said as a possible answer, then I apologize.
Have you tried doing the security relearn procedure?
1. put emergency brake on to disable daytime running lights
2. make sure all doors trunk and hood are closed leave driver window down and reach in threw window
3. try to start. If it doesn't start, leave the key in the on position for 10 min on 97-03 cars and 15 min for 04 and newer cars. The security light should turn off after this amount of time.
4. turn off ignition for 3 seconds
5. Try and start the car. It probably won't start. Repeat step 3 two more times.
6. If this doesn't work disconnect battery for 5 seconds and then try and start the car.

What year? Mine is an '02. The key does not have a chip and my spare is one made from Walmart and it works fine. If it was because of no chip and it needed it, it wouldn't start at all. You need to replace the ignition cylinder, the passlock comes with it, you can't buy one without the other. I'm not sure if the ones from auto parts stores can be tumbled to match your key (I think they can). I had mine replaced by a friend with GM parts. It took him about an hour and a 1/2 to change it out and he took out most of my dash to get to it. He had to do the relearn procedure above because he forgot his computer at home.
When mine was acting up, I would just leave the key turned to "on" for 10 minutes until it quit flashing "security" then turn the key off and start. Never had to go through the entire relearn procedure.
