Alright, My Grandad just gave me his '87 Monte Carlo SS and it only has 57,000 miles on it.

He had it re-painted all white and completely revamped the interior.

The only problem I have with it is that it takes me turning the ignition on 3 times for the car to come on once it has been parked for 8 hours. Once it turns on, it runs perfect though.

Any suggestions as to what it could be??

 

Sounds like you might be losing fuel pressure. I forget if the 87's have throttle body injection or carb's?

Hi O`Neil, it's great to have a GrandDad like that 4-Sure...

Sounds like you need to clean or replace your ignition switch.

* People carry their keys in their pockets & it picks up dirt (etc) + may people put to many things on their key rings & the weight hanging & swinging can cause damage to the switch.

If it's not the switch, it could be vapor locking

Is the engine stock ? Does it have the stock ignition ? fuel pump ? Intake/carb ?

Just curious MCF staff...why would well documented (with pictures) how-to threads be rejected and moved to general sections (or disappear all together) but a question about a car not starting be approved for the how-to section?

 

Alright I made it public

 

It is important - especially in colder weather - that the choke be properly adjusted. To start a cold engine that utilizes a carb you need to depress the gas pedal once prior to cranking the engine. This sets the choke and restricts air flow so the engine will receive a richer mixture and start. Once it starts the choke should open as the engine warms. If your engine won't start using the above procedure examine the choke. Make sure all linkage is clean and moves freely. A slight adjustment of the choke may also be required.

 

Check the fuel filter, If it sits a bunch there may be a ton of debris inside of the lines. another thing is to make sure the electric choke hasnt gone bad and make sure you pump the gas once or twice before you start it and let us know how your making out.
