Default 2007 Monte Carlo SS transmission issue

My wife had it out yesterday driving to stores.
On the way home transmission started acting up Would only move in 1st and reverse. No Drive , 2nd or 3rd.
Any info would be helpful. Transmissions on those aren't cheap.
Car has 108,000 on it. Had a transmission filter and fluid change about 2000 miles ago.

Why did you have the trans serviced in the first place, the fluid and filter change? Has the trans ever been replaced? Any kind of jerking or hard shifting recently? Hesitation from a stop or while shifting? Strange noises? Hows the fluid look now?

The transmissions in these cars are (most of the time) garbage. Youre lucky if you made it 108k on the original. Some last forever but the majority fail faster than they should.

It could be as simple as a solenoid going bad but usually that will affect shifting 1-2 or 3-4.

Default 2007 Monte tranny

Never did nothing the last 7 years to tranny. Original tranny. Recently had it in for long time service, motor mount, power steering pump, wheel bearing , plugs and wires. Could TCM be issue.

Two years ago, at 82K miles, mine lost reverse. Had a reman GM transaxle installed by local Chevrolet dealership and it was about $4,500 out the door. It was expensive, but I planned on keeping the car for a while, so I pulled the trigger. I bought the car with 38,700 miles on it and no way of knowing how it was treated, although I've got a pretty good idea............ I've put 10,000 easy miles on this trans and it drives like a dream. I don't stand on the gas pedal because if there's a third trans to be installed, it will be by someone else.... I did treat the new trans with ZMax when it was installed, too.

That's the unfortunate predicament many LS4 owners eventually run into. Two thoughts:
-Another stock trans will very likely have the same stock trans issues eventually. As far as I'd researched, GM never made any improvements to address the extremely high failure rate. If you plan to own the car for less than the warranty period and do not plan to do any mods, I'd probably go this route. The cost seems reasonable, especially with the warranty.
-An aftermarket semi-built trans would help address the common LS4 4t65 trans issues. Its the only way to go if you plan to mod the car (as GM will try hard to void the warranty if you do any engine / trans mods). If you plan to keep the car very long term, it could also give you peace of mind in that scenario as well. The downside of course is finding a reputable builder / dealing with an unrelated shop to install it as it likely won't be local.

IMO, that's the main reason LS4 car resale value is so miserable.

Its absurd to buy the high performance trim level, and then not be able to use any of the extra power for fear of destroying the trans (especially at only 300ish lb ft).

I completely understand where you're coming from as I was in a similar boat on my GP GXP. I was more gentle with that car than any car I've ever owned as I didn't want to perform a $5k repair on a $5k car. Sure enough after 50 or 60k miles, I got the typical 4t65 occasional delayed engagement where it would rev then slam into gear randomly. I was absolutely furious. I hate to say it, but the wreck that totalled it is the best thing that could've happened to that car.

Not a bad deal. I paid just over 4500 a couple years ago with a 5yr-100k. This was for a full rebuild, not reman. They supply a rental? Most "better" shops ive been to do that so its a good sign at least.

Seems like a decent deal but dont take one shops word for it. I wouldnt anyway. At the very least, I would get a second opinion. Ive been told before I need a full rebuild when it was a shift solenoid.

Nice car.

Default Transmission

Thanks for all the input. Headed to GMC dealership to get the process started. 36 month or 50,000 warranty.
my wife has only put appx 7000 miles a year on her car. For $3500 it last, probably put around 20,000 miles on it.
Going to follow any maintenance they suggest plus if anything happens within 3 years they will supply dealership car for use.
Thanks
Ted
