How long has it been since you changed your oil? Could be thinned out oil or lifter ticking. A ticking could also be an exhaust manifold gasket leak.
I am sure there are other causes and others will give some ideas.
Does the ticking increase or decrease with RPM's of engine or does it stay the same?

Have you gotten your ear close to the engine to try to hear in which area it is loudest (front, back, right, left)?
I am sure others will respond also but my guess would be exhaust manifold gasket leak.

Yeah sometimes it is really difficult to tell where a noise is coming from. I guess you could wait until it was dark out and then start your car. As it warms up/once it's warm and still running, use a flashlight to see if you have any exhaust coming from around the gaskets. While you are at it with the flashlight, you may also want to look under your car near your down pipe for any escaping exhaust.
