I am hearing a knocking sound on my car and was wondering if anybody can help me narrow down the problem. I'm fairly new to car repair, but I hope this will be something I can fix myself.

When I drive I sometimes hear this knocking sound. My wife thinks it might be coming from the passenger side in the front. It doesn't always happen, and it's not very often. But when it does occur, it only does it when I coast. If I touch on the gas pedal, it stops. If I let up, it starts the knocking sound again.

Any ideas?

It is a 2001 Monte Carlo SS.

 

check to see if turning the a/c on and off makes it come and go
