Some hardware stores have a test to verify if it has a chip. But my guess is that it does not. I know my '04 Monte and my wife's '05 Impala are non-chipped keys (which I love that fact).

My 2001 Monte LS does NOT have a chip but I have seen other posts claiming the same year does. Got two original keys and one extra which is just a hardware store key, that is, just a blank key cut to fit but no plastic housing but it starts the car just fine.
I bought the car used and it's the Canadian build if that makes any difference? The Canada built cars have different dash light symbols for the security system, coolant level warning etc.
Don't know it this makes any difference with the keys or not though.
Hope this helps and doesn't add confusion!

AFAIK the '01 has a resistor built into the key. When I purchased my '03 I had an extra key made at the hardware store and it would not start the vehicle. I had to go to the dealer to have a key made. They matched the resistance of my original key to the blank they used.

Chipped/non-chipped clearly varies. As I mentioned, both my Monte and my wife's Impala are non-chipped. I know because I bought a non-chipped Chevy key blank for an extra Monte key (had the local hardware store cut it) and we had an extra key made for the wife's Impala, standard hardware store, cheap-o blank....
Perhaps when the car was ordered new the chipping was an option???
I honestly am not well versed in the security built into the key.

Just an FYI, my two 'original' keys (car was bought used) have HY KO on the plastic cover. Like I said, I also have a third key from the hardware store that was just a plain metal cut and it starts the car fine. I agree with previous posts that keys from this year of car are hit or miss as far as having a chip/resistor. I was having security system starting issues but that turned out to be the ignition switch, not the keys. I was able to replace just the switch and put the old key tumbler back into that. All security system issues as well as the dash lights freaking out, flaky turn signals, fuel pump continually pressurizing, etc. were fixed with the new ignition switch.

Here's my keys to the Monte and Camaro. I always thought unless you saw the chip it wasn't a chipped key.
I'm surprised to see that they integrated the chip on some Montes

Even current GM look like the ones for 6th gens, yet they are "chipped". I don't know how they do it, but they do.
