Default 1997 Monte Carlo Fuel Sending Unit Relacement

How do I replace the Fuel sending unit? Do I have to drop the tank or what?

Thanks for any/all help.

Yes, it's on top of the fuel tank next the the fuel pump connections.
6th gen. Monte's have an access cover to get to it, but unfortunately 5th gens. do not.

So, if the gauge is good but the ground is bad, can i check/verify that before dropping the tank?
