Default 04 monte ss problems

ok guys im new to the forum and im havin some problems with my monte. i just got out of the honda/acura game and i got myself a 04 monte ss N/A and im having a few issues.

1.) everytime and i mean EVERYTIME i get gas the car will not start at the gas station or it stalls when i pull out of the station and then it will start and shut right off. and then it eventually backfires through the throttle body and then it starts right up and acts like nothing happened

2.) im hoping this is a small issue but my transmission...when i first drive the car its fine or if i do highway driving its fine. but when i get back into the city and im going from stop sign to stop sign the transmission kind of bangs when going from 2nd to 3rd. but then if i shut the car off and turn it back on and drive away its fine for about 10-15 minutes and then it does it again. im hoping it just needs a fluid change.

3.) my gas gauge must be very off because i drove about 110 miles and my gauge said that i used 3 quarters of a tank and it moves constantly. but the trip computer overhead said that i only used a little over 4 gallons.

4.) lastly the check engine light is on and 3 codes came up...an 02 sensor, catalytic converter and one for the evap. the dealership said they replaced an o2 sensor but the light came back on about 30 miles later. i dont know what else to do with this thing. i just bought the car a week ago today and it was fine on the test drive and then it started giving me problems within 20 minutes of signing the papers and leaving the lot

if anyone has any advice please let me know. any and all responses are appreciated

So when you get gas and then start the car back up it stalls right away? What if you have your foot on the gas pedal slightly, does it keep running? Check the MAF by disconnecting the wire and see if the start-up is good. If that's the case, it's most likely the MAF sensor. If holding the gas pedal slightly keeps it alive, it might the the Idle Air Control Valve (IAC).

This could be related to number 4. Your cat could be clogged and causing this. Although try the fluid/filter change (use Dexron 6). The transmissions on these cars are a weaker link, a shift solenoid might be going though

There is a level sender unit that usually goes bad in these cars. I deal with mine and just use the tripometer and fill-up every 250 miles. You can replace just the fuel level sender unit for about $100-$150 bucks.

Front bank or rear bank o2 sensor code? If they changed the wrong one, obviously the code will stay. If it's a code for the rear-bank o2 sensor AND the cat is showing a code, replacing the cat might make both go away.

EVAP is a pain to diagnose. Could just be a bad gas-cap, could need to get the system smoke tested to find the problem.

wow thanks alot for your response everything your saying sounds about right. i did read up on the fuel level unit or whatever and it seems to be a known issue with these cars...thats no big deal.but yes everytime i get gas it stalls if i start it and then keep my foot on the gas it will stay on and then as soon as i take my foot off the gas it will start back up. and then after it has its little tantrum it starts right up like nothing happened...

Unplug the MAF first and see if that helps.

If that doesn't fix it, then you can TRY to clean the IAC (they get pretty caked on with carbon deposits) but you may need to replace it.

They are all pretty common problems in the W-Body world.

Here's a list of some more common problems to look out for: https://montecarloforum.com/forum/ge...lutions-30154/

I really wonder how many issues are linked to a bad CAT. Getting that checked out I think is the big first step.

As for the evap, yeah, that can be a bit of a pain to diagnose. It can be a bad vacuum line or seal somewhere. Cheap test is have the car idling, get a can of starting fluid and mist it around anywhere that has a vac line/seal/connection. If the engine idle changes, you found an area to focus on.

to the forum I agree with what Chibi told you especially the MAF sensor I was have similar problems with my MC before i totaled it. I couldn't keep the car running unless my foot was on the gas the WHOLE time I drove the car replaced the fuel filter and it helped a little bit but replace the MAF sensor and good as know car never ran so good!
