Default '04 intimidator - tach acting funny

Hi everyone.
Do we know what feeds the tach in the cluster? I mean, is it hooked up to a sensor or something like that? possibly like what the old speedometers were set up with directly hooked up to the tranny?
If I drive at highway speeds when it's damp, the tach will work fine for a bit then if I have to slow down, the needle will stay around the 2k mark even though the engine is running slower. Then, when I speed up to normal cruise speed, the needle behaves like the 2k mark was the, for example 1k mark, and then creep up to 3k.. This continues until it reaches the 4k mark and just sticks there.
Now, when I let the car sit overnight, I can 'reset' it back to zero by turning the key to accessory and then off again multiple times.
It seems to do this when it's damp. I have a FWI installed and the computer is sitting directly on themetalplatewhere it used to be (just not in that plastic housing).
This isn't happening on my other '04 (LS model also with a FWI and computer installation on metal base where plastic housing for the air filter used to be).
It seems to happen only when it's raining or wet roads though. I would think that if the cluster is going on the bum, it should misbehave all the time. Any thoughts? Perhaps waterproofing the computer more? any sensors I need to change maybe? I don't really want to change the cluster since it's a D.E. edition and don't want to lose the signature.

Thanks in advance.
