Default Engine identification

Hello this is my first time on this site,

I recently purchased an 85 Monte SS for my 19 year old daughter. I believe that the motor is not the original 305 because the valve covers have the bolts across the center not around the parimeter. From what I can tell its an 87 or newer. The numbers stamped on the block in front of the passenger side head are (CC 5 174). Can anyone tell me what motor I have? And does anyone have a good website to go to to determine this? Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks,

Try
Phone # (866-453-4123) to GM that can help identify via that serial # on the front of the block by the water pump.

Take a look by where it bolts up to the transmission by the back of the head on the driver side that is where you can find the cast number of the block, when you get that pop it in the old google and should give you the awncer your looking for,

Guys,

Thanks for the info. I'll pull the numbers from the back of the block tomorrow and hope I can come up with some good numbers. If not I'll try calling GM on Monday.

Thanks again
