I haven't asked but, like Tadd said, I assume they had an incident and now require it to be sure they're covered - that's over 100 fire extinguishers on the show field. Judging requires your hood and trunk to be open and windows up (judges ask you to open the doors while they're judging the car) - the fire extinguisher has to be clearly visible near or inside the car - I lay mine in the trunk, some choose to lay it on the ground by the front tires.

When I went to the monte nats in York pa, I read about the extinguisher (it was my first and so far only time going). Some people moaned a lot about the extinguisher rule.
Personally, an extinguisher is cheap. I brought one to the show (but don't have one typically with me). Some of the organizers either witnessed or know people that witnessed cars at a show damaged due to 1 car having a fire. Had someone had an extinguisher handy, it would have protected a lot of car damage. I have no problem with a car show wanting participants to have an extinguisher handy. If you have a show field fill of abailable extinguishers, it is cheap protection. I'm surprised the gm nationals don't require one.

 

Understood so next year I will bring one.

Great job on the photography. Congratulations to the winners and to those who put the event on. There were some really nice cars their. I hope I can make it to Bowling Green next year. It will be my first trip to the nationals.
