Stereo wiring harness blues!

Stereo wiring harness blues!
I'm having a bit of a dilema. I have a 2005 Monte that came with the stock cassette deck. I went to best buy to get an aftermarket CD player, the "helper" was telling me I have to buy a $125.00 wiring harness to properly hook up to my car (the CD player only cost $100.00). The individual also said that the Metra wiring harnesses (about $18.00), cause oil lights to come on, then fries your computer. Is there any truth to this, should I buck up the cash for the premium wire harness or am I getting snowed?

hey buddy just wanted to say that i went through the same thing and it turned out that you actually do need the harness. i bought an after market head unit and in order for it to work properly i had to buy a harness. what it does is it bypasses the computer so that your car keeps door chimes and stuff like that. since most of our basic functions are in the radio, what the harness does is, although you cant customize the settings anymore, keeps from like the "change oil soon" light from coming on but still keeps your security and battery symbol from your message center. it sucks but trust me its worth it. i paid around the same for the harness.
