Default Stereo or Amp on last leg?

Since i bought the car i notice here and there the speakers would cut out for a second and come back, didn't matter weather on cd, tape, am or fm,

I am Wondering if my stock deck or amp may be on it's way out

well it has gotten progressivly worse with time, yesterday was a really bad day

drive to work had no sound for the first 10 min of my 15 min drive,

driving to side job after work 1/2 hr drive it worked maybe 5 min total of the drive in 30-35 sec intervals

wires on the back of the radio are tight and well conected ( checked/looked at it all when i was doing my deep cleaning)

radio still has power and displays song station time ect,

I had a similar issue with my factory stereo but it was just my front speakers. Rear would always work but on occasion the front would stop, radio would still change station, function, etc.

When I installed my Alpine headunit, I bypassed the factory amp and never had an issue in the three weeks that it was like that. I currently ran new wires for all of the speakers and am in process of adding new ones. My guess was the something not working properly within the factory amp since the speakers worked well when bypassing the amp, radio still worked, etc.. Not sure if it's a common issue or not.

If you planned on adding new speakers and a radio now would be a good time it sounds like. May just be something like a loose connection between the radio and amp, amp to speakers,

I'd bet its the amp. GM radios seem to be pretty reliable. I dont think i have ever seen one fail under normal conditions.

Factory amps on these cars, as well as impalas have a wire that gets severe corrosion on the passenger side of the car. It is the main 12v wire that runs back to the amp - I would check here first. Pull of the passenger sill cover and cut open the loom of wiring. Look for 1 orange wire running into 2 separate orange wires. This is where the corrosion typically occurs. If this is the case simply repair the connection with some solder and fresh wire. Or if you have a multi-meter, meter the orange wires at the amp and see if they are getting 12v to save you some time.

I am an Autotech at Best Buy and I have seen this issue MANY times in Monte's and Impalas.

It could also be something as simple as a common ground....(Happened to me once)
Or it could be a low voltage situation...Battery or Alternator....Id be curios as to what is the resolve...

I'd take this as a good excuse for an upgrade

Maybe for the heck of it....

Run a single ground to the amp...and see if that solves the problem?
(something to try) Electrical is always tricky....(Not my fave problem)

Cant hurt.. to try.

In all seriousness - check this wire. I almost guarantee it to be the culprit.
