Default Bad sound quality, need new amp?

I have a 2000 SS and when I got it, only the left side speakers were working. Tried to adjust balance and fade but nothing helped. Removed the amp and bypassed it as instructed on other sites. It gained a lot of bass in the speakers which is ok to me but the front door speakers have some distortion. I replaced them with some kickers so I know they aren't blown or bad. Anyone else have the same problem or do I just need to get another amp. I have factory head unit and wiring. Or is there an adapter to hook up an aftermarket amp to the existing wiring harnesses in the trunk?
