Installing the radio to the trunk is mainly for:
maintaining chimes (with additional speaker)
being able to reset oil change, tire monitor, etc. (all can be done with other procedures)
to be able to "reprogram another fob easily"

If you don't care about chimes, then you probably don't need the radio in the trunk. If you keep it on hand, you can always reinstall it for 1min to reprogram another fob, if need be. There's a special wiring harness that allows you to run it to the trunk and still have a connector in the dash.

Here's some links to metra and scoche for your year car.

You'll need the antenna adapter, wiring harness and 2 din trim kit depending on stereo model and if it come with one that works. Also odds and ends, like speaker wire and rca's depending on the route you take with the speakers.

There's various steering wheel control modules, I've heard good things about the Axxess one (on metra's site),

Look on amazon or ebay for the components, they are generally cheaper than from the manufacture website or crutchfield.

I'm going to be installing a 2-din soon, as well. That's how I found all this stuff.

btw, I highly recommend finding a color chart for the wires, said to make it so much easier. I'll dig one up for you, if you need it.
I'll also throw a plug for lessco electronics on youtube, he knows his stuff and is willing to share. He's awesome IMO.

What about the vehicle anti-theft system? is that still gonna function?
I'm fixin to replace my radio as well. the door chimes, onstar and bose amp can all go away as far as I care. ill be installing my own amps,

ive done this many many times on previous cars n trucks....

what would be sweeet is if you could unplug the harness from the bose amp and use it for speaker wire hookup ....I wonder if the in dash plug will fit that one also? hmmm I have an idea

anyhoo sonic electronics is better than crutchfield this is what I'm gonna use
Axxess LC-GMRC-01 (lcgmrc01) Radio Replacement Interface for

they have other adapters if you want to keep onstar and bose and steering wheel controls as well. pretty much plug n play as far as I can see.
