2000-2005 Factory HU Removal
Hey guys, I just got an aftermarket Head Unit that I want to install in my car. It's a Farenheit TID-580 Double Din Radio. I want to install it, but I'm wondering how to get the black trim from the dash off to get at the radio. Also, since this is a double din radio, what would I need to install it? Dash kits? Wiring kits? My car has the onstar system, but it is not in use as I did not resubscribe to it. Please advise. Thanks!

There's a couple of screws under the steering wheel that come out holding in the trim panel. Drop the steering wheel down and put the shifter into 1st, and grab hold of the facia and pull straight out. The whole thing just snaps in. Then you can see the mounting screws of the factory head unit. Make sure the Theftlock is unlocked 1st.
You'll need a double din mounting kit, about $30 at any audio store, a steering wheel adapter for the steering wheel controls, and a GM wiring adapter, I believe. Solder all the connections. You will loose your door chimes without the Onstar kit.
Oil life and tire pressure monitors can be reset without the factory radio. See the owners manual. Make sure you are happy with the lights on and security features before the factory deck comes out.

Hey thanks for your help on this! I called around today and found that I needed a few adapters. I was told that I needed a GMOS04 adapter and a PAC adapter. However, I wasn't told what model PAC Adapter I needed. Also how hard is this install? Ultimately I want the vehicle to have a set of JL audio 10's I have sitting in the garage, the kicker 6x9's I have installed in the back, and I'm going to be putting in some new door speakers later on. However I want the vehicle to work exactly as it was from the factory.

Pretty tough demand, getting everything to work like from the factory! That's why my factory deck is mounted in the trunk. My stereo system is a ground up install, with all the adapters needed, plus it's own power via a yellow to Optima battery. Technically, I could have 2 complete systems running speakers at the same time. Adding an amp complicates things, as does an aftermarket deck as NOTHING is compatible with factory decks. The ONLY thing I was able to use was the XM antenna, but the connector to the receiver was different.
I started from scratch, so I can beef the system up down the road, by adding 2 amps and more subs. The wiring is all in place. Monster brand cables.
More amps will require a larger alternator, like a 160 amp. My wife's new Solstice GXP has a 140 amp alt', but we got a puney 105 amp. Not a fan of flickering headlights. I see WAY too many of them!
Running off the 2nd battery levels out the voltage for me. A co-worker has 3 batteries for his system.
