In searching for my amplifier I searched by the part number on one site and got this:
"Part number 10378742 was superseded by part number 15885366."
Made me wonder, is there something faulty about the original amp part# 10378742?

That is a good question. Try calling the dealer and asking them. They are able to tell you this information on the computer.

I purchased a 2006 Monte Carlo SS rebuilt. When I turn on the stereo the front speakers are not very loud and when I turn the fade to the back speakers they are barely audible. I do have the amp between the back speakers. What could be the cause of the low audio output?

Exactly right. I have the factory 6 disk. Amazed me. I had no idea it was a 6 disk changer. I have two door speakers and two 6x9s. Going to just upgrade them and not use a sub. Going to with basics in the rear, and adding a tweeter in the sail above the door, and the same type door speakers.

I will say my 05 Monte Carlo had a much better sound system. They cheapened everything after that.

I was addressing a rust issue (imagine that) and pulled the carpet back on the right and there sat what appeared to be a small amp attached to the fenderwell. It says XM on it. So it could just be a receiver. I know my 05 MC had an amp it sounded great.

You can put the tweeters up above the door in the triangle where they should be. The call it the sail area because it is a triangle like a sailboat sail. Crutchfield sells 6" with a separate tweeter starting at $70.

The 2000-2005 Monte does offer a premium sound package. If it has that, there is an amp mounted under the package shelf between the two 6x9's in the trunk. During this range, I believe it was 2003 (maybe 2004) GM changed the amp. To my knowledge all premium sound packages had a 6 speaker design (woofer and tweeter in the door, mounted to the same plastic housing and 6x9's in the back). The big difference I found was 4 channel amp (earlier years, so the front woofer and tweeter were on the same channel) vs 6 channel amp (later years) that put the front woofer and tweeter setup on their own channels.

I found a LOT of this out as I was looking to retrofit the 8 channel Monsoon amp from a Grand Am into my 2004 Monte, as well as upgraded 6x9's like the Grand Am has (the Grand Am uses 2 or 3 way 6x9's that use two channels per speaker, actually has 4 wires per speaker). I can make it work but I can't get the sound to sound "right" to me, as it does in my Grand Am and the reason I found is the Monte factory radio lacks a "mid" adjustment to go with bass and treb. And I want to stay with a GM factory radio.... So I am at a bit of a bind in that project.

Also, XM came to the Monte in 2003, the receiver for it is right where you found it. I actually mounted a XM receiver and tied it in so my factory radio has an XM option, I use that to provide an AUX jack (so I never mounted the XM antenna since I never plan to actually get XM). I did mount the receiver in a more concealed space in the trunk, I am a bit surprised GM did not do the same.

Yes I had an '05 SS with the factory 200 watt amp. Sounded great. I have an '06 now, and they cheapened a lot of stuff. Basically a two door Impala, but that is OK, Much easier to get parts for. Sound system is just OK, so that is how I know about doing the tweeters up in the sail. Looking at my window sticker, it says I have 8 speakers. News to me. But no mention of an amp, like in my 05. Now I guess I will do some investigating.
