Yea the fines for a shop that messes with them are big.
There was a shop that got shut down around here afew years back for altering the cats on some kids camaro.A friend mine worked there said this guy would do stuff like that all the time.
Turns out that day he was gutting a set of cats on a mid 90's camaro with a dmv inspector there with a check car.Next day they were closed for good.
From a shop stand point I wont mess with them. Now what falls off in thge drive way is a differrent story

Have hacked cats on every car I've owned in the last 10 years, try practicing on a junkyard cat

I am not a fan of cats at all... That being said, the law is the law, whether we like, agree or disagree... As mentioned here, hi-flow performance cats will solve your issue with sound... I replaced my stock cat for a Magnaflow hi-performance one and it did increase the sound & performance a bit, add headers to that and you will be where you need to be... Good luck...

I like the magnaflow cats got one on my mule. They wont clog up as much as a oem cat.Good tone too.If you still have to use a cat there the ones to go with.Plus there a lot cheaper than a replacement cat.

I replaced my cat with a high flow one and sold the original to a scrapper for $200. That's a pretty good chunk of cash towards a new cat.

The cat blow out on the mule(98 dakota) took out the hole exhaust.Just ripped the pipe right off of the cat.To replace just the cat was $900+ for a factory cat,an the cheapest aftermarket crap cat was around $600.The magnaflow cat an my flowmaster cat back was less than $400 shipped.Couldn't beat plus it sounds good an got a little more power out of the worn down engine.

I guess I got lucky... My old performance shop got me my Magnaflow for $80.00 after some wicked rebates were added in... I miss those guys...
