I just bought an 05 Monte Carlo Supercharged SS not to long ago, and now that I have a fairly good feel for the car, I would like to make it faster.
My plan is to take the catylitic converters off, but what I'm worried about is if I take them off would it be irreversible to but them back on (California smog)?

I know that there is more that can be done to increase the horsepower/fuel efficiency, but I'm unsure exactly what can make that happen. I've searched all over the internet, and I haven't found really anything to do with that type of Monte Carlo, so I was wondering if all of you have some information that could lead me into the right direction?

CA is a hard state to mod in. You need to be pretty careful with what you choose.

I BELIEVE you can get TOG headers and still pass smog, might be the only option there.

Then once you get those, put on a nice CAI, throw on some 1.9 modified rockers, get colder spark plugs, drop to a 3.6 pulley with a tune and if you have no KR go to a 3.4 with another tune.

You start getting into a lot of visible mods, you will have trouble with smog. My Monte has an after market tune, CAI, and cat back exhaust. The smog shops don't know and can't tell it's got an aftermarket tune, so they think it's just a CAI and Exhaust. I got hassled by two different shops before they would smog my car. When you pick a CAI, go with one that is California emissions legal and you won't have any issues.

Removing the cat converter will not yield much of an improvement in your performance, but it will create a lot of headaches and hassle for you when it comes time to pass an emission test. Bottom line is any engine modification and/or bolt on performance part (cat back exhaust, CAI, etc) needs to be C.A.R.B. certified if you live in California. You can get away with some internal engine mods and a PCM tune, but any physically visable parts need a C.A.R.B. number if you don't want to get hassled. C.A.R.B. certified parts will come with a sticker that has this number on it which should be affixed somewhere underhood so it is visable when the car is inspected.
