Default Exhaust tip question

So currently I am looking to do a lot of modding to my 2006 Monte Carlo SS and one of those things is to change out the mufflers and put some flowmaster super 44's on it. But I also had a question on, if I had just put some larger tips on what I have now will that change the tone or anything like that? I know tips don't really make the car louder but I'm not really clear on if it will change the sound/tone. If it does do you guys recommend just changing the muffler anyway and is there a specific tip that you guys have that you guys have tried that you like the sound it produces?

My 2 cents is the muffler tips will not change anything. They are purely asthetics. Others may chime in who are more knowledgable and correct me, but I don't think so... I stand corrected by Mike 00LS, learn something everyday....

There are specialty muffler tips that give a turbo whine sound effect, more of a high school kids first car thing... Link below:

Yes & No. Tips can alter the sound a bit based on a few things. First off, resonated versus un-resonated tips. Secondly is the shape. If you have tips that are really skinny rectangles, they will sound a bit deeper than a circle or oval because they'll build up a bit of pressure behind them.

As far as round or oval tips go, it's really not going to make too much difference. The real sound difference that comes from exhaust is where they're located under the car, the further out behind the car they are, the different it'll sound to you inside as you won't get the vibrations like if they were more under the car. But the tips themselves have nothing to do with the sound in that aspect.

haha yea I'm more so looking for a deeper throaty growl if that makes sense. Right now with the stock muffler and tips on the SS it sounds pretty good. I just want it a little louder as well as a little deeper

When I order my mufflers and tips is there anything specific I need? When I go to flowmaster's website for example it gives the specs 2.25 Offset In / 2.25 Center Out. Do I just need the muffler and tips that fit that and just have them welded on? Or am I going to need any adaptors or anything like that as well or can the muffler/exhaust shop just take the 2 and put everything together?

Thanks 03JGMonte, Thats about the size tip i'm looking for. The ones that come on the 06 SS are a smaller diameter and they just don't fill the space around them enough

Oh and I have to ask, What is the outlet size on you're tips? Just so I have an idea on what to look for, since I like that size.
