In the quest for better performance, many enthusiasts start with the exhaust system first. And if they're really serious about it they come all the way up to the engine with that performance exhaust system. Well just think about it. Look at this stock exhaust manifold (left) compared to this nice swooping header (right). Amazing difference, but exhaust systems are only a small portion of the equation, you next have to go under the hood of the vehicle. That means that you need something like this K and N induction system. It's going to allow more air to move into the engine and it's going to smooth out the flow of air into the engine. So now we have lots of air coming into the engine, we've got the ability to get lots of air out of the engine but we may not get all of the performance that we really and truly want. So what's the problem? Well, the problem is this giant choke point in the middle of the engine. You see the stock components: the intake manifold, the air plenum, the throttle body and so on, they may not be up to the task. So you might want to change the entire intake system, but even after you've done that you may still not be there because right here in the cylinder head are intake ports and are exhaust ports and they're all matched to the stock configuration, the stock amount of air that can flow through this engine. So to get the ultimate in performance you want to go to a better breathing cylinder head as well. So exhaust first, make your plan there, then intake, as far as the air filtering components and the air delivery, then into the air plenum, intake manifold, and the cylinder head at the same time. By doing this you'll get the best performance out of your automobile and you'll really be able to take advantage of your modifications.

Diagnostic tuneup helps boost auto performance

If your car has at least 30,000 miles on the odometer, a diagnostic tuneup before summer road trips will maximize fuel economy and minimize the possibility of breakdowns.
"There's a lot of confusion today about what tuneups are," commented Jeff Czach, owner of Czach Automotive on the Northwest Side. "Tuneups are no longer about changing plugs and wires. They're primarily a maintenance procedure. Not only will a tuneup make the car run better, but it can also help drivers pass the more restrictive emissions tests."
If your car is off-warranty, an independent shop with properly trained technicians might offer a friendlier hourly rate than the dealerships. Look for ASE-certified technicians, and make sure the shop has the equipment necessary to work on your late-model car.

Basic mechanical tests, such as engine compression, vacuum and cylinder leak-down determine if the engine is fundamentally healthy, meaning there are no cracks in the block or heads, burnt valves or blown gaskets. Testing engine (manifold) vacuum also alerts the technician to restrictions in the exhaust system caused by corrosion or buildup in the catalytic converter.
Have the technician check and adjust base timing. The on-board computer cannot tell if the timing is out of adjustment. The technician also should check the condition of any serpentine belts for cracking.
A tuneup includes checking the ignition system on an oscilloscope to make sure all the components, including plugs, wires, distributor, coils, etc., are functioning properly.

The ZZPerformance Power Log front manifold and crossover will probably be my next performance mod.

I'm told that the cat back portion of my factory exhaust is good to over 400hp, it's the front portion that needs help.

How 2 `Boost Your Car's Horsepower
[:-]Automakers are usually more eager to improve gas mileage and keep maintenance costs low than to maximize performance. That means most cars are born with the equivalent of a stuffy nose. Here are two ways to increase horsepower and bring out your ride's inner hot rod.
Steps [ol][*]Upgrade to a free-flow aftermarket air filter. [*]Buy a free-flow air filter that fits your car. [*]Open hood. Locate the air filter housing. (Look for the long pipe-like thing connecting the engine to a square, plastic box.) [*]Remove housing. Unscrew clamps or screws and open filter housing. [*]Remove filter. Discard the old air filter (Note: remember how it is fitted). [*]Clean the inside of the box with a damp cloth. [*]Insert new, free-flow filter. [*]Close housing box and drop hood. [ul][/ul][*]Enhance your engine's computer with a power module. [*]Disconnect negative battery cable. [*]Locate the car's computer. Look in the driver's manual, a Chilton or a Haynes guide to see how to access the car's computer. [*]Unplug wiring harness from computer. [*]Plug in an after-market power module. Insert it between the wiring harness and the computer. [*]Reconnect negative battery cable. [*]Follow the module's instructions for starting car. [*]Fill 'er up with gas and race with up to 30 extra ponies.[*][:-](Is that a SpaceRider ? : )[*][ul][/ul][*]Upgrade to a freer flowing exhaust [*]first, find out the exhaust piping diameter of your exhaust. do not just measure the diameter of your exhaust tip. Measure the pipe that comes out of your catylitic converter, as its usually the smallest. [ul][*]search online or in a store for a performance exhaust system for your car. Search also for videos or sound clips of different exhaust systems as some of them may make your car sound unappealing to you. [/ul][*]You'll want to find a "cat back" system. These systems run from your catylitic converter to the end of the exhaust piping. [*]Almost always you'll want to get a system that is 1/4 to 1/2 inches LARGER than the one your car came with from the factory. Some people can go larger, but it requires serious modification to the engine. Making the exhaust TOO free flowing can have a negative impact on low end torque, so you'll probably want 1/4 inch for a 4 cylinder, 3/8 for a six and 1/2 for a v8. [*]Once you have the system, you can either cut the old one out yourself, or have a shop do it. [*]If you cut the old one out, cut it just after the catylitic converter and leave an inch or two to clamp or weld onto. Detach the rest of the exhaust system from the hangars. [*]

Automotive Articles - 4 Ways To Increase Automotive Performance
[:-]
In these days of high gasoline prices, it may seem ridiculous to consider ways to increase your car's performance as they are almost always associated with increased fuel consumption. However, there are four ways to increase performance that do not have to negatively impact your gas mileage. Let's take a closer look at each one.

1. Reusable Air Filters. Landfills are stuffed with items we use once and then throw out. Auto air filters are one such item and through the life of a car you can go through 6-12 of them with no problem. For approximately three times the price, washable and reusable air filters are a great alternative. When you purchase one it likely will be the last air filter your car will ever need. Reusable air filters enable you to gain slight increases in horsepower and acceleration as well as to impact the environment in a positive way.

2. Performance Chips. All new cars are operated by a computer chip that tells how much torque and horsepower can be displaced. Performance chips or recalibrations of your current chip can produce significant increases in horsepower and torque for your vehicle.

3. Performance Exhaust Systems. Cat-back or "catalyst-back exhaust systems" are a great way to free up trapped torque and to unleash horsepower. Keeping all the important emissions parts in place, a cat-back system incorporates large width exhaust pipes and low restriction performance mufflers into your car thereby lowering exhaust back pressure. A side benefit is the really awesome sound emitting from the exhaust system.

4. Cold Air Intake. A cold air intake is an under the hood mod that helps to reduce the temperature of the air entering the car for the sole purpose of increasing the power of the engine. Side benefits include enhancements to the appearance of the engine bay as this part can be attractive and colorful; the sound the unit makes is also appealing.

Costs for each of these performance enhancements can vary greatly. Shopping online with a trusted wholesaler is one of the best ways to find top quality parts at the lowest possible prices. By doing the work yourself, you can save a bundle and enjoy the fruits of your labor in no time
