RE: what trans do i have?
As far as I know, the only transmission offered for an 80's Monte Carlo SS was a 4-speed 200-4R automatic. I don't know if you're Monte is still stock, but I know people like to swap out the 200-4R for the 4-speed 700-R4 automatic because its suppose to be a stronger transmission. A Turbo 350 automatic is also a common swap.

RE: what trans do i have?
If you have a 3-speed in your car right now, chances are good that it is a Turbo 350. I've got a Turbo 350 in my 76 Monte Carlo and I like the transmission, but what I'd really like to have is an Overdrive gear. I daily drive my car and I have a somewhat mild 350 in it with a 3.73 gear ratio. I've been playing with the idea of putting in a Bowtie Overdrives Level Two 200-4R (same length as a short tail Turbo 350) because I'd like to get better fuel economy while cruising on the highway. I guess it all depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If you're frequenting the dragstrip and not planning on doing a lot of highway (or in town for that matter) driving, I'd suggest sticking with a Turbo 350. If you plan on frequently driving this car on the highway or in town, I'd get the 700-R4 for better fuel economy. Just my 2 cents.
