...Yes, your 2002 AweSome Chevy Monte Carlo S.S. is a 6th Generation...
There is a debate on the 06-07 Monte Carlo's...
Some say it's a 7th Generation & others say it's a updated 6th Generation Monte Carlo...I say it's a 7th Generation..
I'm looking forward to a New Generation Monte Carlo from GM ~>

There were 6 generations of Monte Carlos:
1st Generation: 1970-1972
2nd Generation: 1973-1977
3rd Generation: 1978-1980
4th Generation: 1981-1988
5th Generation: 1995-1999
6th Generation: 2000-2007
According to GM, the 2006-2007 was merely an updated 6th gen, there was never a 7th gen, but to make it easier for people to distinguish between them, this forum, and several others calls it a 7th gen because a lot of parts (interior and on the front end) aren't swappable.

I think the 06 and 07 should be called a 7th Gen they changed everything about the car. Interior exterior, wheels and engines. As for history on your car look around here a bit there are some good stickied threads with lots of details. Also the wikipieda page is pretty good.
