Default transmission ?'s

ok its been awhile since ive been on here, since then ive got it runnin a helluva lot better, turned out the timing was about 8 degrees out but it ran ok cause the gas was turned up abunch, anyway fixed that and got it tuned in good, put new mufflers on it, sounds great, now to the ?'s, its got a th350 in it, i WAS going to put a 6 spd in it t-56 or wahtever, but now instead of dealing with all the clutch components and everything ive decided to just put in a 4 spd auto, my ? is what is a good 4 spd auto to put in it? ive heard that unless you do some stuff to the 700r4 its a pile, and i know that the th400 is also a 3 spd, i imagine that the 200r4 is not worth thinkin about either, is a 700r4 the only way to go? im kinda tryin to get quicker acceleration and also save gas when im not racing it, cause 4k rpm's goin 70-75 mph in 3rd isnt good on gas

It's gonna cost you a lot to get a good 700r4.. Go to thirdgen.org or ls1tech and look into the transmission forums.. use the search if necessary to find reputable dealers.. I bought a built 700 and adjusted the TV cable just like you are supposed to and the damn thing still burnt up within 50 miles.. I have talked to enough people who have had conversions done at shops and they still burn up. You really need to make sure the cable is adjusted properly.. I think 1200-1500 for just the transmission any less and it might not be what they say it is.... then a good converter would be another 300-400 bucks ( basic street/strip with 2500-3000 RPM stall ) . I just went back to a nice TH-350 and live with the rpms .. just went larger with tires to help offset so 2800 is about 65mph.. Plus costs for possible built driveshaft to work..

I think the 200-4R is a good O/D automatic transmission but a lot of people say it's weak. The one in my '86 LS Monte has always been a good trans for me.

I do know a lot of Classic Chevy guys love the 700R4 they put in their cars.

so i would be better off just getting the manual and dealing with clutch issues or keeping the th350? the monte has 275/65/15's on the back right now and 215/65/15's on the front to keep it from rubbing, the back are a little wide because it rubs if i turn like on an off ramp from the interstate, it runs 4k at about 70-80 mph staying with traffic on i-70, it doesnt overheat or anything it just uses a lot of gas, im tryin to get better milage plus better acelleration, anyway right now it doesnt have a cam and i think the converter is basically stock for the th350 im not sure, i didnt put the engine and trans in, i got the car with it all already done so i dont know much about it other than what ive done, another ? though, my speedo was about 10 mph faster than what i was doing, and then it broke cause i pegged it out i guess, how would i go about fixin it?

New cable and putting the correct color gear in the trans tail housing.. contact a trans shop for one that is close.. that colored gear is what translates speed from the trans to the speedo.. What rear end gears you have?! I have 3.73's with 255/70/15 and 2800 rpms is around 65 mph.. You could look up calculators online to tell you RPMs vs. Speed if you know the rear end gear.

i dunno what the rear end gears are, i imagine stock, another question, if i buy an aftermarket speedo, that registers like 160 or somethin, would the stock cable still bolt into the new aftermarket speedo? anyway i imagine the gears are stock so i dont know what they are because i havnt looked it up, and i have 275 65 15 or 265 65 15 i forgot anyway and tell the trans shop that and the trans is a th350 instead of the stock 700r4 and they can give me the right cable or whatever?
