Perhaps your ears are adjusting to the volume? Once you have your music up relatively loud for a period of time your ears sort've adjust to it and it doesn't seem quite as loud.
I come into my neighborhood blaring death metal sometimes without even realizing it .

That feature should be found on the "menu" option of the radio. Auto-Volume.
I will say sometimes my radio does sound loud and clear, other times I feel it sounds just ok. I notice at night it sounds really good. During the day it sounds just ok. Not sure why, but I think your ears do play tricks on you.
In the morning, when I get into my car and forget to turn down the radio from the night before, I get startled by the loudness. I think to myself, it did not sound this loud last night!
