So it was a sad day, just got it back from the shop yesterday, new axles, both sides and a little brake maintenance and then today a person turned left in front of my son. He has two witnesses that say it wasn't his fault and he was not speeding, but I fear the damage is more the the perceived value.
Car is a 2002 SS High Sport with 104k miles and was in great shape until today.
Tires replaced 2 months ago, both axles yesterday, mufflers 4 weeks ago.
This car looked like a 2-3 year old car and drove tight, great car.
We see the insurance people on Thursday, wish us luck, a local body shop estimated $4500

That is sad to hear. By the sounds of things, I assume all involved in the accident are safe and well.
Hope things end up in your family's favor with insurance.

Thank you Jason, yes I forgot to mention no injuries in the accident, which is of course most important.
Dropped off the Monte Carlo at the body shop to get fixed tonight.
I have GEICO and the other party has State Farm.
GEICO could not have been better to work with, the adjuster who looked at the car could tell I was a little more than concerned about loosing the car, and understood that Blue book value would be tough to apply to my car. My car has 104K looks in better condition than most cars over 3 years old on the road. The GEICO adjuster came up with $4500 in damages and said the car had a book value of $5000. He said it could be totaled, or, if I wanted, we could repair it. Should get it back in about two weeks. I will keep you posted.
Oh and State Farm, they suck.
