Road Trip
well im new here, and i recently started working on an old 1986 Monte Carlo SS that had previously sat for 14 years in a garage. My concern is not getting it moving or started or anything im working on that at the moment, i was curious as to what input you might have on preparing this monte for a Road trip from PA down to louisiana in a few months. Granted there is already going to be a fair ammount of items to be replaced but i was curious as to what you guys might think about taking this car on a trip like that almost right out of the gate after i get it running. FYI it has a 350 racing engine in it, not the standard 305. this 350 has been bored .30 over making it a 355 and it has a 4 barrel quadrajet carb. It was built by a local 350 master. He builds alot of engines for the Drag strips and Dirt tracks in the area. It was parked because of a warped exhaust manifold. If things go as planned i might have it running by saturday. ill post the video of its first start in 14 years here for any of you that might be interested.
welcome to the forum, and id be interested in the video. after 14yrs id probably take a real good look at any and all the rubber parts, tires, hoses, brake lines, belts. i personally wouldnt take it on a long road trip like that, but you do have a few months before you intend on going to get it into shape. i must say i find it a little odd that a race engine would be running manifolds, and a q jet. most chevy guys run holleys, and headers. does this motor have an aluminum intake manifold, factory or aftermarket fuel pump, factory hei or aftermarket?
Money is the reason for the Quadrajet and the manifolds. It was originaly my mothers car, she blew up the stock 305 it had from running it hard, the lower end was rebuilt, and it blew up again. So my parents went and talked to this guy about getting an engine that could handle my mother's heavy foot. so he built one. ill be sure to post the vid then. If its not completely ready for the trip im not going to take it, but i would like to take it if i can.
Well, ive got it down to a few things left on my list to get it runnin. I just primed both my valve covers today, going to paint them tomorrow and put them back on after i lube up the valves and replace the seals. After that its just waiting on the stainless steel mesh fuel line i ordered to get here so i can replace the section going from the fuel pump to the carb. then its time for fresh gas after i drain the Seafoam mix and time to fire it up!
