Old Monte Carlo for first car?
Hey guys, I;m new here looking for my first car. I found a 1987 Monte Carlo SS with a 5.0 and only 51K. My budget is about $9500 and this car is $8995. Perfect condition with custom black wheels and like I said 51K. Would this be a good first car? Im 16 and need a car for high school and work. Im paying for some and my parents are helping me a little. Thanks!
Welcome to the forum! It really depends on what your needs are for the car. $8,995 is quite a chunk of scratch for a car, especially a first one. I would have a reputable mechanic check the car out completely prior to negotiating on a final price. With a price tag of $8,995, it looks like you will be purchasing this car from a dealer. There will ALWAYS be room for negotiating the cost at a dealership. In the end, whether or not you get the car, it will be up to you and your family to determine what the real worth of the car is. Good luck!
I honestly wouldn't pay 9k for a 87 SS, especially with the stock 5.0.
I think for around that range you could find a nice 04 SS, or one of the nascar editions.
You could probably even find a very nice 86-87 ss with a better engine in it for that much, but remember they wont get the best gas mileage.

Hi `John & Welcome to the Monte Carlo Forum..
It's your $'s & your dream, but I would suggest really doing your Home Work on that amount of money...
If the 87SS is your dream & you have researched everything about them...Then I would have it inspected by a certified mechanic & take it for a super/super long test drive...
If I were in your position, and it was my first car, I would suggest that you take your time, do research on everything you like in the price range that you can afford...
Also, check on insurance cost b-4 U buy...
ALso, don't spend all your $'s on buying a car..Save some $'s for maintenance & repairs 4-Sure...
I would research every car in your price range & really check out the car b-4 you buy...
Buyer's remorse can be terrible....Getting a car you thought you would like, but a few days later, you find it's really not what you wanted, or it blows `up
, because you did not have it checked b-4 you purchased...
Wish you the best of luck & let us know what you decide..
Happy Holidays to you 4-Sure...EnJoy
I would get a 2000-2005 V6 Monte S.S., great MPG's & Power..
You get a Big Bang 4 your $ when you find a good Monte 4-Sure.....Check Auto Trader/Cars.com & do your homework...
WHAT HOMEWORK
LOL
Yes, it will pay `off in savings 4 -Sure....Don't learn the HARD WAY, it's 2 expensive....That's all that's falling outa my head..GOOD LUCK
