Default new monte carlo owner needs some help!

whats up i just bought a new 1979 monte carlo 267 v8......i do not know much about cars, i am late in the game and am just starting to learn. i have always loved this monte carlo ever since i saw the movie training day.

now i have a couple of questions im hoping you guys with expertise can help me with. I feel that I would like to put a new exhaust system on the car. I feel it will help the perofrmance and the sound will be great too. Can you guys tell me what you think of this exhaust system.

one is cat back and one is header back, after researching i see cat is exhaust system is replaced everything after the cata converter. and header is the whole thing basically.....

well my questions are which is better system?
what are your opinions on these models?
what advantages will i get with this new model of exhaust system?
also what exhaust system did denzel have in training day in his car?

thanks guys

Welcome to the board. I would suggest that if you're keeping the car relatively stock, go with the cat-back system. If you're going to throw in a built 350, 355 or 383, go with the header-back system. Either way, if you are required to pass emissions testing in your area, you will need to cat the system. Pypes Performance has similar systems for G-bodies as well.

I was planning on getting the cat-back system for my 86 Grand Prix and then eventually upgrading to a set of Headman HTC headers which come with a y-pipe and conform to emissions (http://hedman.com/products/?id=3479&iset=4411&rsku=4411) and then add on a high-flow cat.

i dont have emission testings in my area so im good on that

but now for my next question.....if i kept my 267 and got the header back system, would it be bad? i mean would it help performance wise?.....also have the flowmaster header exhaust, have they received good reviews. they are great no?

For a stock engine, especially the 267, you're not going to see that much of an increase in performance. I don't know anything about the Flowmaster header exhaust. All I know about Flowmaster is I use to have a pair of two-chamber series 40 mufflers on my 76 Monte Carlo and they sounded great. I have the Pypes Performance X-pipe and Street Pro-mufflers on my car now and it still has a good sound and better performance than the crap lousy "custom" dual exhaust a hole in the wall shop put on my car a few years ago. Here's a link to Pypes Performance's dyno testing page (http://www.pypesexhaust.com/dynotests.html). Check out chart 4 where they tested an 85 Monte Carlo SS with the stock system, Pypes cat-back system and the Pypes Tru-X system. Hope that helps.

you could also buy small tube headers and a header back exhaust from jegs or summit. i went that route myself its cheap and works well. keep the headers to 1 5/8 and keep the exhaust tubing to 2.25 inch since the 267 is super under powered.
