Check all the standard things. Pull the radiator cap and check for oil in the antifreeze. Pull the engine oil dip stick. Is it clean? No water in the oil? Remove the oil filler cap and start the car. Is there much blowby coming from the cap? Look at the tranny fluid. Is it bright red or is it dark brown and smells burnt? If it is a winter car is it rusty underneath? Does the heater and defroster work? Everything else would be minor but check lights, tires, brakes, and axel joints. Good luck with your new Monte.
