RE: mid 80's SS trans question
if your talking the SS of the mid 80's they are a 4th gen.
As far as being auto or clutch I belive that they were a auto unless orderd diffrent I have seen only two in my life that were not a Auto and i honestly could nto tell you if they were not a converstion or a factory car that way.
Great question !! Maybe R.J. might have more on this he actually ownes one of the old dinosors and i would think he has more info on them they i do.

I ordered a 1985 Monte Carlo SS brand new in the summer of '85,and the 305 high outputengine with the 4 speed automatic was the only thing available.A posi rear was optional. You could get a V6 in the Luxury Sport model. There were only four color choices: black, white, silver, and maroon,as well as two interior choices: maroon and grey, both cloth. If you see any 83-88 Monte's with a 350 or a manual transmission it was modified.

RE: mid 80's SS trans question
Only information I've ever seen is the Mexico sold Montes were the only ones offered with a manual transmission. All the U. S. sold Montes were automatics. I've been told there were 3 - 4 different verions of the auto trans offered such as the 350 turbo, and two versions of the 200-4R over drive transmissions.
I do know until recently it was still possible to get all needed parts to convert an '81-88 Monte to a manual trans from GM. It's because some of the '78-80 Montes were offered with a 3-speed manual trans and all these needed parts fit into the '81-88 Montes. You'll still need to find the transmission but the bellhousing, clutch pedal and needed parts as well as some other small pieces were all still available at your local Chevy dealer.
I've seen several '81-88 Montes converted over to manual trans by someone. I wasn't too sure of the conversions. In 2004 I met a guy from OH (where else) at the Monte Nats in Bowling Green KY with an '87 SS that had a Muncie 4-speed in it. He's the one who gave me the information about converting a 4th gen Monte tomanual transmission. He said he'd coverted several Montes at that point in time.

RE: mid 80's SS trans question
no 4th gen monte carlo was made with a manual trans in canada or the u.s and the only motor availible in the SS model is the 305 h.o (l69)and the only motor for the LS is the 305 (lg4) and trans was the 3spd th350 and then from 84 on they got the th200r4 every thing beside's that is swaped at the dealer or by the owner

RE: mid 80's SS trans question
the cl and ls also came with the 3.8 buick motor ,the 200,229,267 also i think
but to swap a manual trans in a monte is mot that big of a problem
the 83 monte carloss had a th350 3spd
84-88 monte carlo ss had the th200r4 4spd

RE: mid 80's SS trans question
NMCOA used to have a member from Mexico who's car was a manual trans car. More then likely converted at the dealer but I thought someone mentioned the car was a factory manual transmission car.
I'd love to have an '86-88 SS with a 5 speed in it. Right behind the 572 big block under the hood.
