Ya I need to practice launching. The last time I launched to 2000 rpm and eased into it. I was kinda nervous not being sure what to do. Now I kinda got the feel for everything. Hopefully next time will be better, plan on going back in two fridays.

Got any tips or suggestions?

It sounds like you're on the right track (no pun intended). Launching around 2000 rpm is a good place to start with, but feel free to play around with it too. I wouldn't stomp on the gas either, try to feather for the first second or so. Also, avoid the burnout box. The only reason you should use that is if you're running with slicks.

Another thing to think of is what condition your tires are in. Start shopping around for some stickier tires. You can get some so so performance tires, or some Nitto 555's, or shop for some slicks. However, the stickier the tire you use, the more wear and tear your tranny will take. Our tranny's don't like taking stock power, so adding more is going to be rough on it.

Keep the car in 3 if you were using Overdrive. That will prevent the engine from trying to shift too soon for gas mileage reasons.
