Info on the car I would like to get
I know I am creating a little too many threads so I apologize. I am just trying to get my feet wet.
Looking at an 85ss this weekend. Silver with maroon int. B&M shift kit, flowmasters(not sure if full exhaust), 88 replacment tails, 88 replacement steel hood. Supposedly only 10,300 miles on the car. guy selling for 4200. Anything I need to look for? I plan on checking the VIN (and getting a carfax report) checking the labels on the inside door. I should be able to tell if the car really has 110,300 or truly 10,300 miles on it.
I am also wondering the engine types for the 85's and any other options or features they had that I can look for or ask about. I do also know it has power everything.

ok, thanks. I should of look for that...laziness + work = not a good research combo.
I'm also looking for any other hint or tricks to look for that a site like that couldn't tell me...some thing an owner or ex-owner could know.
wow...the 85ss has the 5.0? Any other year have that? I am guessing the 4.3 is the LS?

The 4.3 was the V6, standard on the LS.It was fuel injected. The 305 (5.0L) had a 4 barrel carb, and was used in all the SS models through 1988.The exhausts on the SSlooked like duals, but it was single until after the catalytic converter, then split with 2 mufflers and tailpipes.85 was the last year without the 3rd brake light in the rear window. The 85 had steel wheels with trim rings and center caps, then in 86 they went to an aluminum wheel, which continued until '88. My '85 was fully loaded with every option except T-Tops.It was well known that they leaked pretty bad,and cars with them tended to creak and rattle much more. Not to mention, the interiors, especially the dark maroon ones would fade out in about a year or two from the sunlight. So I decided to avoid them.
Thanks laser. Yea, I figured it was a single exhaust before cat. My grand prix was like that too. OOOhhh, sothe 85's DO NOT have the third brake light? THat is deff something I should look for. The car I am looking at doesn't have T-tops so I am ok with that luckily even though I think t-tops would be nice for days like jersey is having today. Everything else is no big deal to me since I would mod it to an extent.

I'm sure the '85s also came with a regular 305 just like in '86/87/88.
The 305 H O (High Output) engines the SSs got were only rated at 185 hp at the rear wheels. Not really a tire smoking small block.
Almost everyone on MonteCarloSS.com says to pull that stock 305 fast and shove in a decent 350 engine or better.
I personally happen to like the 305 in my '86 LS. But it's also not a stock, regular version of the 305. The engine got changed to a 305 H O after the previous owner scrapped the original engine.
No real plans to puill the 305 out of my Monte at this time. I just wish I could get the engine to turn the back skins over like it used to when I first got the car in late 1996.

The 5.0 is only a 305 engine. (guess what the 5.0 Stang boys have under the hood)
There were two versions of the 305. A regular 305 and the 305 H O.
The 305 H O engine was rated at 185 horse power at the rear wheels.
The smaller engines offered in the '81 & up Montes were V6 engine. Besides the Montes that got diesel engines and the year a F.I. 6 cylinder was offered.
