Governor

Governor
So I have no idea if I spelled that word right. But I think you know what I'm talking about.
I was wondering if my car (06 Monte SS) has a governor on it and if it does, what my car tops out at.
I guess I could find out on my own...but I've only at the car a couple of weeks and haven't gotten it much over 100mph too many times (in completely safe and legal areas...of course...yeah...).

The SS I think is at like 135 or 140 mph.... I've been to 130 once and let me tell you, it's a scary ride! I had assurance with the car, but it's just the thought of what if a deer runs out in front of you or if your'e closing in on a car, what kind of move it may have... if your tire will hold up... man, what a ride!
You can also use a tuning program to get rid of that governor if it isn't enough for you.

The old replace the chip trick doesn't work out on these cars too well... I'm not 100% certain where that "just plug this chip in and take off" comes from, but it's just wrong, that's all I can say. These eBay "add 30 hp and 15 mpg" chips are a scam. If that could be done so cheaply and easily, GM would do it. The only way to really get rid of that governor is to re-tune the PCM (Power Control Module) That PCM also controls I think the timing, the air-fuel ratio, the speed limiter, and on that engine, regulates how many cylinders are in use at one time among other things. Pretty interesting.

the speed is limited but its pretty high. i want to say its 154 but ive never hit it. ive had it up to 140 and it had a ton more left but i thought that it would be asking for it. the diablo tuner will set it to 158 i believe because of the tire rating and with hp tuners you can remove it entirely. either way its an extremely high rate of speed and highly unlikely to be used often if ever. heres a gxp at 154. ignore the fools in the second video.

On a dhp tuner you can set the speed limiter to 255 mph which is more then fast eough for me.
Secondly, where did the chip come from....in the mid-80's GM started putting computers on the carbs then in the late 80s they went to a TBI system. (TBI means Throttle Body Injection) The TB replaced the carb and had two injectors. On this setup the computer had a chip which of you wanted a "hot chip" you could have one "burned" or buy one for your computer. All you would have to do is replace the chip since the program was stored on the chip. That was also ODBI system with ODBII they replaced the chip with a computer which you will have to write to it to change the program. ODBII came out around the mid to late 90's. Now do to trucks getting all of the fancy stuff later some of this info may be more for what they did to trucks. But if you have a TBI engine then you have a chip and of you have ODBII then you have to write a program to it....if that makes any since at all.

nah that wasnt me that was some kid with a gp gxp. i saw it on youtube a while back. ive only had mine to the 140ish mark but the car felt good and had a ton left. its tough out here in nj cops everywhere and tons of traffic at all times. i do agree though that car was moving crazy fast and i wouldnt have wanted to stand there and film the drive by on that tiny road.

yep i heard the only reason theres a gov on any car is because the dont come stock with tires rated that high. its nice to have 140 on the dash though. im pretty sure if you get new tire you can safely get a tuner. be carefull im sure somebody loves you. click it up.
