good idea, bad idea?

Taking the car out onto the highway usually cleans the engine out a little, and the engine will run smoother.
When I was a kid, my dad would take his car to a local mechanic that he trusted before any long trip. Just to give it a once over, and see if he (the mechanic) could see anything that would be a problem out on the highway.
I would definitely get that gas leak fixed ASAP. Gas leak + hot car parts = barbequed car.
Something else you can do on your trip to ease your mind. Keep a cell phone in your car and your friends car. In the rare chance that something happens, you can call your friends in the other car for help.
I really think you'll be fine though.
Have a safe and fun trip!

Depends on your sense of adventure. My Monte is the first car I've owned that wasn't a piece of crap, but that never stopped me from traveling abroad. I had an '83 Firebird that always "broke down". I've had many break downs and missed several intended destinations, but usually I make my own fun (find a bar). Breakdowns are good stories and good memories.

JuniorCar...
I once drove from Windsor to London and back in my 1985 Cavalier hatchback.
2.0 litre four banger. Base model. No airconditioning, in the middle of summer. I found out the hard way how hot and boring the 401 can be.
