Darn I was wishing it was for the 3800 plastic upper intake manifolds or the plastc lower intake manifold gaskets so I wouldnt have to change mine.

GM recalling 1.4 million passenger cars over potential engine fires

by Chris Paukert on Apr 13th 2009 at 12:56PM

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just announced a major recall covering nearly 1.5 million General Motors passenger cars from the late 90's and early 2000s. The recall affects various Buick, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models equipped with normally aspirated versions of GM's much-utilized 3800 3.8-liter V6.

Apparently, some of these engines can drop oil onto the exhaust manifold during hard braking. If that manifold has gotten hot enough and the oil dribbles below the heat shield, it can start a small fire. The flames can then engulf the plastic spark plug wire channel, potentially resulting in a full-on engine compartment fire.

The fix? Dealer service departments will be asked to remove said spark plug wire retention channel from the front of the engine bay, and then retrofit two new retainers.

Models Affected:

1998-2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Default GM RECALLS 1998 - 2003 3.8 non-SC

Lets weigh in, family! This is certainly a concern for MANY of us here. But I have to wonder, the Series II 3.8 is virtually unchanged from 2003. Why did the recall stop there? Does it mean that I have nothing to worry about since mine is a 2005? Doesn't make sense to me.

ask ask and ASK your local dealership.

It's free work, so it shouldn't be a problem just by asking

It said there was also some recall isuued last year but I never received a notice for it. Do they send them out to owners that have bought used cars also? The only recalls we've ever received have been on vehicles we bought new. My MC was bought used at the a Chevy dealer.

Default 1997-2003 Monte Owners (Please read)

Last night on news my dad heard there's a recall on Monte Carlos for engine fires.

I just called GM/Chevy (1-800-222-1020) to verify this and to have them check our '03 Monte to see if it's included? It is.

They need your VIN (vehicle identification number) to check to see if your car is included.

They will give you a recall number to give to the dealer so the problem can be fixed.

Well I called my local Chevy dealer to see if they can repair our car? According to them this was not even suppose to be announced till may. Cause they won't have the repair parts till then. (figures)

But anyways. Call GM and see if you car is included in this recall?

It was on a few websites yesterday, news probably picked it up.

the news stories all said that the GM recall would happen in May. They are probably just warning people to try to avoid heavy braking, and see a dealer as soon as they can.

GM just can't catch a break these past few months
