Are We There Yet? We Test GM And Mapquest’s Enhanced OnStar System

Yesterday, WINDING ROAD was on hand with a few other members of the press when GM’s OnStar division introduced a new collaboration with MapQuest. We got to see first-hand just how easy this new feature is to use, though we don’t necessarily see it as a revolutionary step in the in-car navigation process. Either way, OnStar and MapQuest’s new alliance should allow drivers more flexibility and simplicity in planning future destinations, and enable easier access to them on the go.
“Our ten years of experience have taught us that life happens when you’re driving,” says OnStar president Chet Huber. “The value of OnStar Web Destination Entry, which combines the powerfully-simple technology of OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation with the leading consumer Web site for maps and directions, MapQuest, is added flexibility for our subscribers. The new service enhancement will allow them to use the Web to plan their destination while having the freedom to start the journey from wherever they want.”
OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation will be available to more than two million vehicles in 2007 and an additional three million vehicles in 2008. MapQuest and OnStar will start a Web Destination Entry pilot program in the summer of 2007 with a select group of OnStar subscribers, and should be available to all subscribers whose vehicles are equipped with the Turn-by-Turn Navigation feature. Jim Greiner, Senior Vice President and General Manager of MapQuest says, “This represents another example of how we are extending our ability to help consumers access MapQuest services whenever and wherever they need them.”
How does it work, you ask?

I'd love to get ridofthe compass and thermometer and replace it over head like in my brother's Astro van and in Space's pics.
I miss the tripmeter being shown with the odometer simultaneously. Clicking the DIC buttons to show the trip and odo back and forth is a waste of energy.
