Angry GM Ignition Recall

I have a 2006 MC SS and as I was driving about 30mph yesterday, my engine completely shut off. Luckily I was in the right lane going down hill and found a quick parking lot on the side to turn into. Under different circumstances I would have been in an accident like those mentioned on the lawsuit commercials about GM ignition switches.

I had my car towed to my local GM dealership in the St. Louis area and before even looking at my car they told me I don't have a recall issue with my vehicle. I explained that my vehicle "shut off while driving" EXACTLY as described by the GM ignition recall victims. Now I cannot get the car to start at all. But these Chevy mechanics are trying to tell me that my car does have a recall issue with the ignition, but it isn't the one everyone else is having.

What do you guys think. (2006 Chevy Monte Carlo SS)

If I'm not mistaken, the recall was because people were putting 5 pounds of keys on their key rings, in the ignition. Whenever you would hit a bump, it would jostle the keys and cause the heavy ring of keys to pull the corner of your car's key downwards, effectivly shutting off the car.

However, you would be able to immediatly turn the car back on.

However, I'm not 100% sure on the truth of this, as its just what I've been told by multiple people, but havent looked it up for myself.

My recall notice says this:
PARTS ARE NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE, but when parts are available, your GM dealer will install two 13mm key rings and a key insert into all ignition keys.

That's it. New key rings and inserts in the key. No new ignition switches, no lock modifications. If you car shut down with the key in the 'run' position it was not recall related. Sorry

The ignition switches are on backorder, but my notice outright says the ignition switch will be replaced. The inserts on the keys is a temporary 'fix' to prevent people from putting anything on the key ring.

Can you please scan an post your recall notice? Mine doesn't say anything about ingnition, just keys. Of course mine is an 06, which is what the OP was talking about.

The temporyary fix, it says, is to remove ALL key rings from the key.

P.S. My car has never shut off. But if/when an automatic car stalls, I know to Pop it into neutral to re-start.

Thank you,
Tom

I have no way to scan my recall notice at this time, but when I called Burien Chevrolet service department (206.438.8794) a gentleman by the name of Don told me the switches are on backorder and as soon as they came in he would call me to schedule an appointment to have the switch replaced. I don't know how they are handling it in other states, but here in Washington they are replacing the switch.

My recall letter. 2006 LT, 3.5. Motor only shut off once unexpectedly, it seized at 95K. Wish that was a recall.

Back page. Read the What Will We Do section

Front page.

my notice for my 03 also said nothing of a switch replacement, just key bull****! my Mom also got one for her buick and it says the same thing! if they don't do the ignition switch I am going to fight with the buick dealer cause I don't want my 80 year old mothers car to shut off suddenly! Mine on the other hand I can deal with. I think its pretty ****ty for GM not to fix the problem!!!
