The changes I was talking about go just a tad beyond headlights and turn signals...changes suchas sheet metal, interiors andengines, for example.

Based on changes in appearance, the Monte Carlo has several MORE generations, then.
1973-1975 (single, round headlights)
1976-1977 (dual, stacked headlights ... makes for a MUCH different front end appearance)
1978-1979 (single headlights with turn signals to the side)
1980 (dual headlights with turn signals underneath the side ... also, slightly different dash with wood trim)
(and)
1981-1986.5 ... Sport Coupe
1986.5-1988 ... Luxury Sport
...with regard to the last 2,if you, like me, had each side by side, you would notice the changes that make for a completely different look AND feel.

Although I'm still a newbie, I certainly agree that 06-07 is a 7th generation. In fact, I was convinced of that before I even bought one.
In the Lincoln Mark VIII community, there are two distinct and well-recognized generations - gen-1 (93-96), and gen-2 (97-98). From what I can tell, thesignificant changes that separategen-6 and gen-7 Montes are about the same as those involved with the Mark - perhaps even more with the Monte.

Sheetmetal changes were made for the changes in the front ends between '75 and '76.
ALSO... referencing the note about engine changes ... 1975 to 1976 had engine changes ... with 1975being the LAST year a 454 V8 engine was available in the Monte Carlo.
Sheetmetal changes occurred for 1980 to accomodate the different front end of the 1979 model.... Different front fascia and slightly different fenders. Also ... engine change ... 1980 offered a turbo engine, 1979 did not. Course, for that matter, the '81 MC also was available in turbo....
Likewise for the MC SC to MC LS changes..... An SC front fender will not work for an LS. I know a few people who found that out the hard way..... And, the interiors DID change. Note, for instance, the placement of the wiper control on my '81 MC SC (above the **** for the lights) vs. on my '87 MC LS (turn signal stalk).
Course ... on the FLIPSIDE, several places, including GM's own history, indicates that 1978-1988 is ALL the SAME generation. Thus, GM's history indicates the first gen is 1970-1972, second is 1973-77, third is 1978-1988, fourth is 95-99 and so on......
*shrugs*
Yet, at the same time ... GM/Chevrolet literature notates the '81 MC as an "all new generation".....
EDIT to add:
Come to think of it ... sheetmetal changes also had t

GPD,
Where's the info you found and posted that calls the '06/07 Montes the 7th gen cars. It was written information from Edmunds.com or someone?
Cort,
I copied and pasted GPD's information about the '06/07 Montes and them being called 7th generation cars. I sent the info to Bluethunder (Derek) some weeks back via the NMCOA web site. Derek and I had a couple discussions on whether or not these cars were or were not 7th gen cars. So far noreply from Derek on his thoughts of this article?

RE: First on record.....
I owned a 2000 Monte Carlo and now own a 2006 SS.I beleive the 7th generation arguement will never be fully resolved and agreed to by all parties involved. There are some major things shared by 2000-2005 and the 2006-2007.The most obvious is the rear quarter panels and doors, and glass.
Everything from the A pillar(windshield) forward is different, although similar in overall design. The back end is different as well.I am not positive about the trunk lid,but I think the 06 is not as curved due to the straighter bumper. The interior has different seats, dash panel and controls.
The changes to the engine cradle, engines offered, and brakes are significant as well.
So what is the overall conclusion? I will admit when looking for an 06 I really didn't want a black one since my 2000 was black and I thought the average person(relatives,co-workers,neighbors) wouldn't even notice I got a new car.I was kind of tired of the black anyway, but I thought it would look too much like what I was already driving.
Someone once said "same doors, same generation" That may be true, but they probably never drove an 06 or 07.
My personal opinion is that there is enough different to call it a 7th generation, even though some things are shared. The overall different feel of driving the 06 also shows there was more than a few sheetmetal and trim changes.

And, RJ ... not sure why Derek didn't reply to you yet ... though, I know he has been quite busy.

There are differences in the rear bumper covers.
Noticed this myself. Really noticed at the Montes@MIS event back in april while looking at all the beautiful Montes that showed up.
