Personally, I have no complaints about the 3400. I've owned a couple and been around a few more (my dad's) and they're great too after you fix the intake gaskets (which the 3800's also have issues with).

I'm driving the 3100 in a '94 Grand Am as my daily. It's got over 210,000 miles on it. Intake gaskets done around 90,000ish. At 180,000ish in October of '09 both head gaskets and intake gaskets (wish I knew about the aluminum gaskets then). The drive train runs great and this is the engine the 3400 is based on. I've done some work on later model 3400s and I am so convinced the 3100/3400 is a reliable engine, we bought a '05 Impala with a 3400 and 150,000 miles last December.

The 3100/3400 may not have made that list, but I still feel they are reliable, just not as performance driven as a 3800.

When a company uses an engine for over 40 years, you know it has to be good.

I've always heard the 3800 was a great motor. The 2.5 4cyl was always rock solid too.

Maniac I just bought a grand prix with a 3100 partly because of your confidence in that motor and your grand am having over 200,000. There was a receipt in the glovebox for the gaskets done a few years ago so it should be all set.

Yeah it was initially slated to end production in 99 but due to outcry from both customers and investors they nixed that plan. The Series II 3800 was on the yearly Ward's best list from 95-97 and the entire Buick V6 family was on the best of all time list. That family of engines extends from the original 198ci Fireball V6 all the way to the Series III 3800.
