Did anyone know this?
Personally, I have no complaints about the 3400. I've owned a couple and been around a few more (my dad's) and they're great too after you fix the intake gaskets (which the 3800's also have issues with).

i think the 3400 is a good motor. i never had any trouble with mine when i own it...other than the intake gasket

The 3100/3400 may not have made that list, but I still feel they are reliable, just not as performance driven as a 3800.
He was trying hard to beat me.An he had his girl in the stang too.Not too shaby for some thing with close to 250k an 1qt of oil. That olds ran great an got around 28ish mpg.
I've always heard the 3800 was a great motor. The 2.5 4cyl was always rock solid too.
Maniac I just bought a grand prix with a 3100 partly because of your confidence in that motor and your grand am having over 200,000. There was a receipt in the glovebox for the gaskets done a few years ago so it should be all set.

If I recall I read somewhere GM was going to remove the 3800 from it's production lines in the late 90's but due to it's popularity and reliability had second thoughts. Not sure if that rumor is true or not.
But it has proven to be a pretty reliable motor (though it has it's quarks like any design, but most are easy to address).
