Debating on what brand??
3 hundred or thousand? its a 85 or older motor judging by the perimeter bolt valve covers so it should have a flat tappet cam and it has factory heads. so unless its the heads have been worked over and it has a real cam in it i wouldnt go throwing any serious money at it. 350s are a dime a dozen they were produced for over 20 years, and came in just about everything. if youre worried about what brands to shop around for i would suggest a crate motor. im going to assume that youre not experienced with engine builds, and combos. nothing can be worse than buying mismatched parts screwing the motor together only to have it dynamite on you, or not make any power do to a poor combination. save time and money and get a nice crate motor. they usually have warranties and are dynoed.

np. i was there myself once before. 350s are more affordable and was a factory motor. the 383 is a hybrid. its a 350 block with a 400 crank. there are also 377s i believe? that are a 400 block with a 350 crank. the 383 has obviously got 33 cubic inches on the 350 so 1hp per cubic inch youd be making that much more power. 383s having the 400s stroke have a tendency to make far more torque than the 350. which is a good thing since its going in a heavy car. they can both rev, should both way the same, and externally should be pretty much identical. you can find both in crate form. i would say the only con with the 383s are the added cost for them in crate form, or if youre building one the machine work clearance. personally if i were you and budget allowed id go with the bigger motor. when it comes to NA v8s bigger is better. a bigger motor can work less hard to make the same power that a smaller motor will struggle to make. either way good luck, and do your research.
