Question ? Cost to Repair 04 SuperCharged S.S. ?

Hi Member's,
I was asked a few questions I could not answer & I was hoping
that one of our expert Member(s) could answer.

1. Is the cost in the below quote correct for the stated problems ?
2. What is the projected estimated miles that the below listed
problems happens/occurs ?

Thanks for reading

Below is from MSN `Auto's Reliability Report
for a 2004 3.8L V-6 SuperCharged
Engine

A common problem on this vehicle is failure of the Upper and Lower Intake Manifold Gaskets and occasional problems are failures of the Valve Cover Gaskets and Oil Pan Gasket. The failure of the Upper and Lower Intake Manifold Gaskets, Valve Cover Gaskets and Oil Pan Gaskets apply to the 3.8L engine only. The cost to repair the Upper and Lower Intake Manifold Gaskets (without a supercharger) is estimated at $103.00 for the parts and $390.00 for the labor.

The cost to repair the Upper and Lower Intake Manifold Gaskets (with a supercharger) is estimated at $80.00 for parts and $445.00 for labor.

The cost to repair the Valve Cover Gaskets is $23.00 for parts and $170.00 for labor. The cost to repair the Oil Pan Gasket is estimated at $20.00 for parts and $125.00 for labor.

All prices are estimates based on $65.00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic time or any applicable sales tax.

Space, I just did upper & lower Intake gaskets & valve cover gaskets on my son's 2002 Impala LS 3.8 NA The guy I bought it from had fel-pro gasket sets in trunk set # MS98014T & set # HS9917PT3
I checked on line the price for each set one was $48.95 the other set $134.03 so that is not to bad..

Thanks `Jerry, for your time & expertise on this subject. Do you think the labor charges are close ?

It's great that you have the talents to do the mechanical work yourself.
p.s. Zach is really lucky 4-Sure

Hi `John,
What would you charge for the above posted work ? I am amazed that many people can't do it themselves & the one's that could ? Don't have the tools or place to do it (if the weather in bad).

I thought the prices were `high & when I was asked how much it would cost I was way `off compared to the prices or charges that I could find online. Look forward to your reply/cost ? Thanks

$170 for valve cover gaskets is highway robbery. 100 bucks TOPS.

LIM gasket would be 200 TOPS.

Then plus the cost of the gaskets of course.

Granted I don't have a big garage to pay rent on or employees or anything like that. The prices are... semi reasonable I reckon.

Hi `John,
Thanks for your reply & I also reckon that is a super-semi reasonable price 4-Sure.

I think with so many GM engines with this problem I think a shop could specialize on this problem & make a good living. I really think that GM should have had a recall & paid to repair this flaw.

I know that GM is just coming out of bankrupt problems & couldn't do `it, but I think they should at least give owners free gaskets (Yes, I dream a lot : )

Thanks George for posting, sharing. Your price is lower then the MSN Auto's prices in my first post.

All prices are estimates based on $65.00 per flat rate hour and do not include diagnostic
time or any applicable sales tax
.

I do know that certified mechanic's can make good dollars. We have boat/warehouse mechanic's that make good money, but $65 an hour is good pay 4-$ure. Shops are in business to make money & have a high overhead (costs)...It pays to find a good mechanic before you need one, `if you can't do the repairs yourself.

Do you have a Good Mechanic ? Do you do your own work ?
Would you be able to replace the above mentioned gaskets ?

I think I could ? Well, I'd try my best to (LOL) I rebuilt my Honda Motor a few times & did lots of Mod's. I never had to do any repairs on my Monte's. Never had any problem with either one.
That's `all > I'm outa words & have 2 get back to work >

Thanks everyone for your help/words/posts
