Recommended and required are two totally different things. Required in a GTP with supercharged engine yes. In a trans am NO. Maybe recommended for maximum performance in a Trans Am but it's never been required. Wrong info 07montessgirl!!!!
Wow, okay. Well how about this... "I OWN" a Trans Am sweetheart. It says CLEARLY on my gas cap, in my owners manual & in my gauge cluster near the gas gauge "premium fuel only". My GTP says the same thing on the gas cap and in the owners manual. Same thing as "requiring" premium, just different wording. No offense, but get your facts straight. Thanx!

I only wanted to show the difference between "recommending" premium gas and "requiring" premium gas, thats why I listed that both of my current cars "require" premium to avoid spark knock. The Monte Carlo SS only recommends it and will run normally on lower octane gas (although I probably wouldn't go as low as using 87 octane). I just did it for a comparison

I had a Trans Am too and it never required premium. What motor is in it?

LT1. Camaro's the same vintage say the same thing on the dash if I'm not mistaken, gas cap and in the owners manual. Mine says "Unleaded fuel only" above the trip odometer. And "premium fuel only" under the gas gauge.

The only motors offered in 1996 are 3.8 non turbo or supercharged or 5.7 v-8 non of which require premium. I've searched all over the internet and can't find one that requires premium. The only one was a 3.8 turbo edition they made but that wasn't 1996 it was 1989.

I don't own an '06/'07 SS, but this information is available on chevy.com. Follow these instructions:

1) Go to chevy.com
2) Click "View Chevy Line Up" link on left.
3) Click on Monte Carlo.
4) Click on "Standard & Optional" tab at top.
5) Click on "Specifications" tab.
6) Click on "Engine" tab.
7) Fourth Line from bottom states the recommended unleaded fuel for the 3.5=87 and 5.3=92

Happy Holidays!
