Talking Build your own 1972 Chevy Monte Carlo

Okay the year is 1972 and you are ready to place and order for a new Monte Carlo this is your guide and also the pricing for the Car and options. A little not in 1972 gas prices were about 35 cents a gallon and if you made good wages for the year you made about $6K Big managers were around 25K.

That's really neat to look at, thanks for sharing!

Looking at one possible option combo - the base 165 hp engine, 2 speed glide, and the base 3.08 rear end in a 3600 lb car. That mustve been painfully slow! I get future generations also offer hp this low, but at least with a 4 speed auto so you had a bit more gearing off the line.


One neat thing I saw was the optional California emission testing required for registration - only offered on the two 1xx hp engines. Interesting they offered engines that could only be registered in 49 states.

Couple other neat ones
-37 amp base generator
-Adding stereo to your AM/FM is almost $100 extra. Thats almost $650 in today's dollars!

Lived with this all my life. California cars being stifled by pollution controls and power restrictions. Used to be applicable to 1966 and up cars and that $15 certificate needed to be re-done whenever the title changed. I think it's now 1976 and up, plus the certificate needs to be redone every two years after the car is 6 years old.

I knew Cali had some odd stuff- extra required emission parts - different cat, smog pump, etc - strict rules on emissions tests, etc. Id just never heard of manufacturers not being allowed to sell complete engines / transmissions there.

Yeah it's a historical share! I did order a 1972 Chevelle back then and I got an AM/FM with an 8track built-in we carried these boxes with slots for the tapes on them I still have a few 8tracks left but the stereo I used someone borrowed about 20 years ago and never returned it.
I don't know who it was because the wife did the lending. Lol



I sold this car for a $1000.00 dollars over sticker in 79 to my cousins kid and he totaled the car in less than a year.

Thats too bad, thats a beautiful looking car!

The thing this car had was I babied it all the time I had it only had 18k on it when I sold it. But the weird thing was the car was rusting on the front fenders I was polishing it one day and felt a little bump as I worked on it. I looked at it with a magnifying glass and there was a pin hole in it. Showed it to my body shop friend and he said it was rusting from the inside out. The dealer was supposed to have undercoated it and did an anti-rust treatment. It was a no snow car, I only drove it in the rain if I got caught in a freak storm. So I was kinda disappointed that it happened. So it was kinda time to sell it. used the funds for a house down payment after that.
If you look at these pics you will see in the backgound in the Garage a 1966 Caprice 2dr, and a 1977 Camaro sticking out of the doors. So I had plenty of toys yet and a Motor cycle too.
