ouch 150hp its enough for brake stands. but i guess i will have to swap in a 350 good thing theres few wires to swap over. do the motor mounts even have to be changed or is it a direct bolt in swap just unbolt the old motor and put in the new one. good thing 350's are cheap around here.

I guess monte84 will have to find a 350 CUI for his, thats a real let down than the non-SS puts out only 150hp. Doesn't sound like the 305 is worth trying to get anymore power out of.

You can upgrade and wake up the 305 quite nicely, but the same money spent on a 350 will bring more return. This is why I suggest upgrades that can be swapped over to a 350 should he ever go that route.

yeah he's right i have write ups on how to build a 345hp 305 they say exactly what parts to use and all. but i probably will just end up swapping in a 350 or that pontiac 400 small block.

what is the correct timing for an 86 monte carlo ls with the 305 in it. and can anyone show me a picture of where the timing marks are on a this motor. I think if the timing were correct and i did a tune with new plugs/wires/distributor cap/rotor and changed the oil the car should be able to smoke the tires it has off the line and then some. I think with the car is supposed to have more power for more of these.

Stock timing for an LG4 is 0 degrees, L69 is 6' BTDC. Timing tab is on the timing cover - you have to look from above behind the waterpump - its a bad location. See here for details:

In good tune, an LG4 can still spin the tires no problem with just hitting the gas from a stop. My parents 87 Cutlass had plenty of power enough to get out of its own way with an LG4.

well im guessing that after sitting outdoors uncovered for 2-3 yrs, my monte carlo isn't in the best tune. so im hoping after doing a high performance tune up, timing it, and changing the oil in the motor, transmission and adding a shift kit, the car will be much more responsive and i will have to try to not make the tires spin when i floor it from a stop, which currently isn't very often due to nothing happening except watching my gas gauge move towards E.
oh thanks for your help once again
